Releasing Children from Poverty

HELP aims to give Peruvian children a good start in life, releasing them from poverty and enabling them to become fulfilled adults. By providing the necessary materials for them to attend school we change their future and the lives of their families. We do this primarily through a sponsorship scheme, offering people the opportunity to sponsor a child from the Los Huertos area.

Los Huertos is situated in the southwest of Lima in the district of Chorrillos within a particularly disadvantaged area. It has a population of 20,000 most of whom live in extreme poverty. Every year parents struggle to pay for their children’s education and face the tough decision to choose which of the children will go to school that year.

HELP has established a partnership with a local church called Los Huertos de Getsemani to organize sponsorship and distribute the goods.

Improving The Lives Of The Whole Family

• HELP volunteers teach reading to some of the parents in this community who didn’t have the opportunity to go to schools themselves.
• Women in Los Huertos can learn craftwork that will improve their income.
• HELP sends clothes and toys from the UK for families in this community.
• HELP has a telephone line for those women who have suffered trauma after birth and would like to be heard and understood.

Your Important Participation

You can start to make a world of difference to a child today by actively participating in HELP’s work in Peru. There are three ways of doing this and we assure you that any of them will appeal to you.

A. Sponsoring children’s education

Our work is to promote sponsorship of children living in extreme poverty, to provide for their educational materials, school uniforms and other school expenses. You can sponsor a child for as little as £15 per month; that is about 49p per day which will bring you much joy knowing that you are changing one life and the life of a whole family. By giving an extra £3 per month, your sponsored
child can enjoy a good Sunday Breakfast;
this means a total of £18 per month.

B. Raising money- Peru Programmes

• Go to Lima, Peru as a volunteer to do
practical work for 4-5 hours a day for 15 days.
Volunteers will live with Peruvian families and
benefit from daily Spanish classes. Before
you set out you will receive two hours
FREE group Spanish classes.

• Go to Cusco, Peru for 10 days to trek the Inca Trail. The programme
includes flights from Lima-Cusco-Lima. Departure dates from the UK
are at the end of April and the end of October.

C. Donating clothing, stationery, toys, etc

These items need to be in good condition. Just take them to HELP office in Surbiton at any time. We encourage you to promote this activity at your office, school or neighbourhood. We do this with the help of Mum & Me shop which kindly donate items, and British charity Project Peru which delivers them to Lima, Peru.
Our coordinators in Lima, together with the church in Los Huertos, organize distribution of the goods in the community.
